Broiled Grapefruit

I used to think that I hated grapefruit. I remember watching my parents eat it for breakfast and thinking, “These people are crazy. Grapefruit is gross.” In reality, I never actually tried it until last year when Sam and I went on this kick of trying a new fruit a week. Now I love them. They are one of my favorite fruits. Tonight Samuel and I are going to go see The Hunger Games at Alamo Drafthouse, so I know I am probably going to down a whole pizza there, thus I decided to go light for lunch today. I remember pinning a recipe for broiled grapefruit from the blog, Gimme Some Oven, and so I decided to try that out. All I really need to say is… delicious! Definitely give this a try if you’re into grapefruit.

On another note, for any of you who are dying to buy me an expensive graduation gift (anyone? takers?…) I want this cooking book, Modernist Cuisine (the art and science of cooing). It is a 5 volume beauty… and I want it. Only $452. I mean, I guess I can buy it after I start work in July… but I’m impatient. It’s one of my vices.

By the way… I am joking. I will be patient and just buy this for myself one day. But, it’s still cool, and you should take a look at the website.

Broiled Grapefruit

Ingredients:

✔ 1 grapefruit, sliced in half
✔ 1-3 tsp. brown sugar

Directions:

Preheat oven to “broil”, with the rack on the top shelf (so that the grapefruit will be about 1.5 – 2 inches from the heat).

Arrange grapefruit halves, cut side up, in a broil-safe pan.  (You may need to use a knife to slice a small part off the bottom of each half to make sure they are sitting level in the pan.)  Sprinkle evenly with brown sugar.

Broil for 5-10 minutes, or until the sugar is melted and the edges begin to brown.  Remove and then use a knife to segment the grapefruit slices.  Serve at room temperature.

Notes:

Some other ingredients you can mix with the brown sugar include:

✔ crystallized or ground ginger
✔ vanilla extract
✔ cinnamon or other spices
✔ agave nectar
